AMD is working on the Radeon HD 7950 GHz Edition

AMD launched the Radeon HD 7900 series around the turn of the year, and since then a lot has happened in the graphics card market. Above all, it is about the Nvidia Geforce “Kepler”, where the GTX 680 and GTX 670 respectively take on AMD’s models.

To improve performance, AMD launched the Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition in mid-June, where elevated clock speeds challenge the Geforce GTX 680. Now rumors intercepted by Benchmark.pl now indicate that the HD 7950 will also come in a new version, intended to compete directly with Geforce GTX 670.

Just like for big brother, it is mainly about elevated clock frequencies, where the marking GHz Edition points to at least 1,000 MHz GPU. In that case, it means an increase of as much as 25 percent compared to the original Radeon HD 7950, which in theory is more than enough to pass the Geforce GTX 670 in the performance tables.

Other specifications for the newcomer will be largely familiar, with 384-bit memory bus and 3 GB of GDDR5 memory. A new feature, however, may be the same dynamic overclocking that was introduced with the HD 7970 GHz Edition, which allows the graphics processor to go into a turbo mode if the parameters allow.

When and if graphics cards based on the Radeon HD 7950 GHz Edition can reach the store is unclear. The price tag is rumored to land at the same level as the Geforce GTX 670, which can be obtained from around SEK 3,500 including VAT.
