AMD launches Radeon RX 460

When AMD announced the new Radeon RX series with the Polaris architecture, the goal was a lot of performance at low price tags. Following the launches of the Radeon RX 480 and RX 470, the company is rounding out the new graphics family with the entry-level model RX 460 based on the Polaris 11 circuit.

* Applies to variants of Radeon RX 480 with 8 GB GDDR5. Models with only 4 GB have a memory frequency of 7,000 MHz and a bandwidth of 224 GB / s.

In its full design, the graphics circuit has 1,024 stream processors, 64 texture units, 16 raster units and a 128-bit memory bus. With the Radeon RX 460, however, AMD uses a scaled-down variant with 896 stream processors and 56 texture units, which suggests that a faster variant will be released in the future.

In terms of graphics memory, the RX 460 comes with 2 or 4 GB GDDR5 in 7,000 MHz, for a bandwidth of 112 GB / s. The power consumption of the graphics card is officially 75 W, which makes it possible for partner manufacturers to release variants without a 6-pin PCI Express connection.

AMD points out, however, that there is no reference design of the Radeon RX 460 and that partners have completely free hands to develop their own solutions, with custom coolers and circuit boards. Even things like clock frequencies should vary greatly between different models, which is why there are many variants with a 6-pin connection.

In terms of performance, the Radeon RX 460 does not aim for the latest major titles. Instead, AMD hopes that it will be a popular alternative for users who want to upgrade their systems to get a better flow in less demanding E-sports games.

Also special for this launch is that the Radeon RX 460 is also intended for laptops and that it will be marketed under the same brand, which is justified by the fact that the performance should be similar to the desktop equivalent.

Radeon RX 460 will be available in stores today and has Swedish recommended prices of SEK 1,379 for variants with 2 GB of graphics memory and SEK 1,639 for models equipped with 4 GB.
