During the summer, AMD launched the Radeon RX 5700 XT and RX 5700 graphics cards, which introduced the first completely new architecture in over seven years – Radeon DNA (RDNA). The models were followed up in October by the RX 5500 for the middle class, but initially it was only released for computer manufacturers.
Chinese ITHome now reports that the launch of the Radeon RX 5500 will take place on Thursday, December 12, when it will be available in retail. At the same time, it appears that AMD’s partner manufacturers are on the train and on the same day release their tailor-made models.
AMD has not made much of an impact on the performance of the Radeon RX 5500 or what it will land on in price. According to the report, the model from AMD’s will step in as a direct replacement for the popular Radeon RX 590, which could mean a price tag of around SEK 2,000-2,500.
Early tests of the Radeon RX 5500 show that the performance is more or less identical to a Radeon RX 580, but to significantly lower power consumption. Compared to Nvidia, the model is at about the same level as the Geforce GTX 1060 (6 GB) and the newcomer GTX 1650 Super.

* AMD no longer communicates the base frequency of graphics cards as it is “uninteresting”.
It is worth mentioning that the graphics card both lacks the suffix “XT” and that the circuit is a somewhat scaled-down story. The graphics circuit is equipped with 24 computing units, corresponding to 1,536 stream processors, but has only 22 of these activated. Apple’s latest Macbook Pro is also equipped with the full-scale circuit which in mobile version is called Radeon Pro 5500M.
With the scaled-down graphics circuit and Apple’s latest laptops in mind, it’s no big deal that AMD will sooner or later launch a Radeon RX 5500 XT. The full-fledged circuit together with slightly tuned clock frequencies could give a performance boost of around 10 percent.
Finally, the graphics card will be available in two versions with 4 and 8 GB GDDR6, where the latter can be expected to cost a few hundred bucks over the 4 GB models.
