AMD “officially” makes Radeon HD 7990

Already at the launch of the Radeon HD 7000 series in the first quarter of 2012, AMD said that at least one model with dual graphics processors was included in the planning. However, the graphics card with the code name New Zealand never became a reality, although partner manufacturers such as Powercolor and Asus later developed their own models with two Tahiti XTs.

Now sources to SweClockers state that AMD is after all preparing an “official” Radeon HD 7990 with reference design. The new graphics card contains two Tahiti XTs with a total of 4,096 stream processors and 6 GB of GDDR5 memory. The circuits used must be specially selected specimens from the production with low current leakage, which results in lower heat generation and power consumption.

However, this is not about a monster model that can be compared to, for example, Powercolor Devil 13 and Asus ROG Ares II, but about a more everyday variant for a wider target group, probably also with a lower price tag. The launch is said to take place sometime in the second quarter of the year, ie in the period April – June.
