AMD Project Quantum can make a comeback with Zen and Vega

When AMD in the summer of 2015 presented a quartet of graphics cards with the Fiji circuit, the company showed Project Quantum, a compact computer housing the graphics card that is today known as the Radeon Pro Duo. The system never found its way onto the market, but fell into oblivion shortly after the presentation.

Now the Czech Diit reports that the project was put on the shelf, at least temporarily, as a result of AMD shifting its focus to the graphics card. Initially, the Radeon Pro Duo was intended for gaming enthusiasts, but was later re-saddled to target professional users and developers.

Another reason is said to be that AMD lacks a high-performance processor to power the graphics card, which is why the company instead chose to use a Haswell processor from arch-rival Intel. However, AMD agreed that the system would also be available with its own processor, but without going into any further details.

It is therefore speculated that Project Quantum will return and become a reality in just over a year, as AMD will have a new arsenal of products in its portfolio. During the fourth quarter of the year, the long-awaited processor architecture Zen will be released, which in early 2017 will be followed by the graphics architecture Vega with HBM2 memory.
