AMD Radeon “Fiji” leaks in new image – requires a real power supply

Expectant enthusiasts do not have to wait long for a new wave of graphics cards signed AMD Radeon. There are not many days left to Computex Taipei where the Radeon 300 series is expected to see the light of day, but before it has weathered the flagship “Fiji” may have to wait a few more weeks.

The new Fiji graphics processor is equipped with the stacked memory type HBM, for hitherto unmatched bandwidth. The circuit must come in at least two variants; one slightly stripped down where partner manufacturers are given free rein to develop tailor-made cooling solutions and the other a complete variant that will only be delivered in a reference version with a closed water cooler, developed by AMD and Asetek.

After DICE developer Johan Andersson cleared the latter, it finds out in another image, this time from an angle that reveals a very telling detail. At the bottom left, two 8-pin PCI Express inputs are marked for power supply, which combined with the motherboard connection means a maximum power consumption of as much as 375 W according to the ATX standard.

Equipping the graphics card with such a large power supply suggests that it will be a thirsty story, something that could explain why AMD chose water cooling for the reference design. The cooling solution, which involves an external radiator with an associated fan, together with the new type of memory, however, brings with it a clear advantage.

Based on the leaked images, Fiji will be significantly shorter than the Geforce GTX Titan X and looks to be only 17 centimeters long, ie the equivalent of the Mini ITX. That this is the case is confirmed not least by AMD, which during its presentation of HBM took up space saving as one of the advantages.
