AMD Radeon R9-290X pictured with performance tests – faster than Titan

Those waiting for the next generation Radeon do not have to endure long. On Wednesday, AMD will broadcast live from GPU Tech Day ’14, where the new graphics processor Hawaii is expected to be the big number. Even now, however, pictures, specifications and not least impressive test results are leaking.

The graphics card in the picture is said to be nothing less than the flagship Radeon R9-290X. At the center is the Hawaii graphics processor, which is said to contain 2,816 stream processors with four “independent” tessellation units. This includes 4 GB of GDDR5 memory on a full 512 bit wide memory bus.

The graphics card itself is very similar to its predecessors with a matte black encapsulated radiator and fan at the rear edge. The graphics processor is surrounded by no less than 16 memory circuits and it is also visible power supply via 8 + 6-pin PCI Express connectors. For video outputs, two DVIs, HDMI and Displayport are provided.

The result is a graphics card that may well surpass the current performance king Geforce GTX Titan. On Chinese Chiphell, performance tests are published where the new Radeon R9-290X takes the lead and, among other things, runs past Titan in games such as Battlefield 3 and Alien vs. Predator 3.

As usual, however, unconfirmed leaks and test results should be taken with a good pinch of salt. Exactly what AMD has up its sleeve will be revealed on September 25.
