AMD shot at Radeon RX Vega to avoid paper launch

AMD introduced the Radeon RX Vega to consumers earlier this week. In short, these are two models, the Radeon RX Vega 64 and the slightly scaled-down RX Vega 56 with fewer calculation units. In addition to reference cards from AMD, variants signed by third parties await, where, among others, Asus has already shown contributions.

However, the launch of the Radeon RX Vega could have taken place earlier. This is revealed by AMD’s Chris Hook in an interview with Hardocp. The company chose to keep rolling out, in order to speed up production and build up a volume of circuits.

Part of the reason it’s taken us a little longer to launch Vega – and I’ll be honest about that – is that we wanted to make sure we were launching with good volume. Obviously we’ve got to compensate for things like coin-miners, they’re going to want to get their hands on these. We believe we’re launching with a volume that will ensure that gamers can get their hands on them, and that’s what’s important to us.

In short, the company wants to avoid a so-called paper launch, a situation where products only exist on images and in specifications. According to AMD, this includes taking into account, for example, the production of cryptocurrencies, where Radeon cards are high game, which has cleared store shelves in Sweden, among other places.

Chris Hook further announces that AMD is hoping for a Radeon RX Vega card in store on August 14. Before that, reviewers should be given “enough time” to evaluate the graphics cards.
