AMD, the latest professional drivers turbo-charged OpenGL performance

AMD has published a new and important version of the driver dedicated to professional video cards. The new AMD Software PRO Edition 22.Q3, available on the company’s website, have a redesigned OpenGL driver to provide improvements in CAD applications (and not only) very high: we talk about a boost of up to 72% over previous drivers. The new release also introduces support for the Windows 11 2022 operating system available a few days ago.

The work on the OpenGL driver had already involved the consumer sector, with AMD integrating the improvements on the Radeon GPUs with the AMD Software Adrenalin Edition 22.7.1 drivers, receiving positive feedback on both the performance and stability fronts.

Regarding the increase in performance, AMD gave some examples to support its claims by sharing some graphs (others here). For example, in Autodesk Maya the new drivers enable the Radeon PRO W6800 from outperform the NVIDIA RTX A5000 by up to 41%. Furthermore, in Solidworks, the new 22.Q3 guarantees performance up to 52% compared to the 22.Q2 release.

Advances also affect cards in the lower end of the W6800, such as the W6600 and W6400, and should also involve the previous series. AMD Software PRO Edition 22.Q3 drivers have been tested and approved by Dell, HP and Lenovo, but the company says it is working to expand the number of certifications.
