AMD unveils Vega Pro 20 and Vega Pro 16 for laptops – first out in Macbook Pro

Earlier in the week, it was time for Apple’s second event of the year, and instead of phones, the focus this time was on computers and tablets. As expected, a new Ipad Pro was unveiled, which peeled off the home button in favor of a larger screen, as well as the Macbook Air and Mac Mini.

A novelty that was not given much space, however, was the fact that the company also makes a minor update to the Macbook Pro laptops when it comes to hardware. Shortly after the event, AMD announced that in November they will launch Radeon Vega Mobile in the form of Vega Pro 20 and Vega Pro 16, and that Macbook Pro will be the first to release these.

Unlike the graphics circuit used for Intel processors in the Kaby Lake-G family, these are real Vega circuits in mobile design, including support for Rapidly Packed Math found in the Radeon RX Vega for desktops. The circuits are manufactured on 14-nanometer technology and, according to Apple, will offer significantly higher performance compared to those previously used in the company’s computers.

As the names reveal, these are models with 16 or 20 computing units, and both are equipped with 4 GB of HBM2 memory and have a memory bus of 1024 bits. In terms of specifications, very little is known about the circuits, but according to Anandtech, Vega Pro 16 has a turbo frequency of 1,185 MHz while Vega Pro 20 is at 1,300 MHz.
