AMD’s graphics shares rose sharply during the fourth quarter of 2019

With the 2019 launch of the processors in the Ryzen 3000 series with the architecture Zen 2, AMD laid the foundation for a successful year on the processor side. The company has not been as competitively strong when it comes to graphics cards, but new figures from analyst firm Jon Peddie show that AMD is making progress here as well.

This is the third consecutive quarter of increased GPU shipments, However, Q1 which is seasonally flat to down may show an unusual dip because of supply chain interruptions from China due to the Coronavirus epidemic. 2020 is going to be a game-changer with Intel’s entry into the discrete GPU market and a possible fourth entry by an IP company.

The report refers to the fourth quarter of 2019 and shows that the number of delivered graphics circuits increased by 22.6 percent compared to the same period last year. The figures for Intel were 0.2 percent. The weak development is explained by the fact that Intel’s sales are linked to processors in the form of integrated graphics, and since the company struggled with a lack of access in 2019, this also hampers the results on the graphics side.

Biggest rival Nvidia also delivered weak figures during the same quarter. Deliveries fell by 1.9 percent, which to some extent can probably be attributed to the fact that the company’s current flagship models in the Geforce RTX family come with substantial price tags. AMD’s new features in the Radeon RX 5000 series are at relatively lower price levels.

Other interesting figures in the report state, among other things, that 31.9 per cent of all computers during the period were delivered with dedicated graphics cards, which is 0.19 per cent lower than in the previous year. The PC market as a whole grew by 1.99 percent compared with the previous quarter and 3.54 percent compared with the previous year.
