Asus acknowledges cooling issues with the ROG Strix Radeon RX 5700 series

The fact that some graphics cards built on circuits in the Radeon RX 5700 series suffer from problems is not news to initiated followers of technology news. In connection with the launch, eyebrows were raised for the heat development and cooling solution chosen for AMD’s reference design, something AMD themselves waved away with the explanation that the cards simply can withstand these temperatures.

The cooling problem quickly became a non-problem as third-party solutions equipped with competent cooling solutions flooded the market. Asus looked for a long time to join this crowd with its Radeon RX 5700 XT ROG Strix OC, but despite clearly approved cooling performance in the test lab, consumers on SweClocker’s forum, among others, have been reporting the opposite since November.

This has resulted in declining performance, which has led users to discuss a number of different solutions, such as shorter screws, spring washers and spacers, while from Asus’ side it has been quiet until now. In an official statement on its ROG forum, Asus now blames AMD.

The Taiwanese company believes that the cooling performance has suffered as a result of coolers being installed according to instructions and recommendations provided by AMD, more specifically with a pressure of 30-40 PSI (pounds per square inch). Without digging deeper into its research, Asus states that a radiator fitted with a maximum of 75 PSI is recommended in the long run and raises a warning finger for enthusiasts’ modifications that can easily exceed these pressures.

In addition, the modifications of the radiator on the ROG Strix cards in the RX 5700 series are announced, which solve the problems not only exist in the form of shorter screws, but have been mounted on all cards manufactured since January. Dissatisfied consumers with graphics cards manufactured before January 2020 are finally asked to contact their local Asus representative for a “free upgrade”.
