Asus Radeon RX 6800 XT “Big Navi” reaches over 2.5 GHz

There are only days left until AMD unveils the graphics cards in the Radeon RX 6000 series, where the most potent variants go by the collective name “Big Navi”. Leaked specifications and performance results paint the picture in advance of hardware that has what it takes to stand up to Nvidia’s latest additions to the Geforce RTX 3000 series. The latest round of leaks confirms previous reports that “Big Navi” reaches high clock frequencies to a relatively reasonable power level.

The information comes from the diligent technology leaker Patrick Schur, which shares clock frequencies for the Radeon RX 6800 XT. Tested engineering specimens are signed Asus product family Strix and use the “Big Navi” circuit Navi 21 XT. The results come from the 3DMark 11 test suite and indicate a number of test systems with different variants of Asus Navi 21 XT cards. Common to all is that they exceed the clock frequency 2 GHz in base frequency.

The highest measured clock frequency is 2.55 GHz and the lowest measures in at 2.092 GHz. The average speed is around 2.2 GHz while the median speeds range between 2.3 and 2.4 GHz. The highest measured power consumption for the graphics card alone (total graphics power, TGP) lands at 289 watts, but in subsequent Twitter posts Patrick Schur shares more results.

He says he can not distinguish the results between models that have a TGP of 255 watts and those that are at 289 watts, but that the latter can be equipped with extra turning space for overclocking. Other details that can be distinguished are that the clock frequency of the graphics memory is set to 1,000 MHz, which results in memory speeds of 16,000 MHz. Regarding the fact that the engineering copies show great variation in clock frequencies, Patrick Schur believes that this is due to problems with unfinished drivers.

The power figures thus only refer to the levels of the graphics circuits, and it remains to be seen what the graphics card’s total power supply (TBP) lands in. According to calculations made by industry veteran Igor’s Labs, a Navi 21 XT card with a TGP value of 270 watts would land in total power requirement of 355 watts. This calculation includes everything from the graphics memory power requirements to MOSFET components, fans and general power loss when power is supplied to the circuit.

If the above calculation is based on Patrick Schur’s stated TGP values of 255 to 289 watts for Asus Navi 21 XT cards, it would mean TBP levels of 340 to 374 watts, which is in line with previous reports. Then it should also be noted that these are engineering copies, and that power levels and general energy efficiency can be adjusted to the products that reach the end customer.
