BIOS turns Radeon HD 7970 into GHz Edition

That the Radeon HD 7970 and HD 7970 GHz Edition are basically basically the same graphics card hardly comes as any news. In SweClocker’s review, it was found that the physical differences only concern the sensors for Powertune, and that the changes are primarily in the card’s software.

The concept can be captured through a leaked BIOS version on the Icrontic website. The software gives standard Radeon HD 7970 the same frequencies as the GHz Edition, while activating the mentioned turbo mode.

More practically, this means that the GPU frequency is increased from 925 MHz to 1,000 MHz with a turbo mode of a maximum of 1,050 MHz. At the same time, the GDDR5 memory lands at 6,000 MHz instead of the previous 5,500 MHz. The BIOS version works in theory with all HD 7970 of reference design, although of course there are no guarantees.

SweClockers takes no responsibility for any broken graphics cards, and all experimentation takes place at your own risk. For most people, it is perfectly fine to simply overclock to the higher frequencies, without interfering with the card’s BIOS.
