Counterpoint summed up the results of 2020 - Samsung and BBK Group lead the global smartphone market

Analytical agency Counterpoint research published statistics of sales / shipments of smartphones (in quantitative terms) for the 4th quarter of 2020. and summed up the results of the past 2020.

When analyzing statistics for individual brands, Samsung maintains a leading position with 255.7 million smartphones.

If we take into account together the general statistics of brands (subsidiaries) of the BBK Electronics concern (Oppo, Vivo, realme, OnePlus), then this concern is already the leader. Oppo + Vivo + realme have sold 262.7 million smartphones. There is no exact quantitative statistics on OnePlus, according to rough estimates, this is an additional + 15 ~ 20 million smartphones.

General statistics for 2020 and comparison with 2019.

*Xiaomi = Xiaomi + Redmi + POCO

*Lenovo Group = Lenovo + Motorola

* Huawei = Huawei + Honor (before the sale to Honor in November 2020)

In 2020, the market fell 10% year on year due to the spread of COVID-19 and related restrictions that affected performance in the first half of the year. After the restrictions eased, the market recovered in the second half of the year, thanks to deferred demand, which is being met by an optimized supply chain. A strong push for the industry is given by the introduction of 5G communication and its support in smartphones of the mid-price category. 5G shipments continued to accelerate, recording 120% growth in Q4 (compared to the previous quarter). Total 5G smartphone penetration increased to 34% of total smartphone shipments (from 17% in the previous quarter). The growth was driven by the release of the iPhone 12 and a strong portfolio of brands such as OnePlus, Oppo, Vivo, realme and Xiaomi in the sub-$ 300 price range. In addition, there has been a lot of pent-up demand for 5G smartphones. China accounted for ~ 40% of the total 5G smartphones shipped in 2020. Apple’s 12 series of smartphones will have a strong impact on 5G adoption outside of China in 2021. The US sanctions against Huawei and their sale of Honor (in November 2020) also had a significant impact on the market.
