EU backs IAEA proposals on security zone around ZNPP

MOSCOW, 26 Sep — PRIME. The European Union supported the proposal of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for the establishment of a nuclear and security zone around the Zaporozhye NPP. This was announced by the head of the Czech nuclear security department Dana Drabova.

“The European Union strongly supports the IAEA’s assistance (in the operation of the NPP) in Zaporozhye and the constant presence of representatives of the agency at the facility. We also support the proposal of the IAEA Director General (Rafael Grossi) to create a nuclear safety and security zone around the Zaporizhzhya NPP, the conditions (of operation) which has yet to be agreed,” she said during a speech at the 66th annual session of the IAEA General Conference in Vienna.

Earlier, Director General of Rosatom Alexei Likhachev said that the state corporation supports the agency’s efforts to ensure nuclear safety in Ukraine and is ready to agree on the fastest possible creation of a ZNPP security zone.
