Finland to introduce mineral extraction tax in 2024
HELSINKI, Sep 27 – PRIME. The Finnish Ministry of Finance has proposed to introduce a mineral extraction tax in the country from 2024, the ministry said on Tuesday.
The introduction of the tax is based on Prime Minister Sanna Marin’s government program and budget negotiations for 2022 and 2023.
“The purpose of the tax is to take into account the nature of the extracted minerals as non-renewable natural resources and to provide society with fair compensation for their use. The tax does not have environmental protection goals,” the report says.
The amount and calculation of the tax will not be the same for different minerals.
The tax will apply to all minerals mined in Finland, the report says. The taxpayer of this tax will be mining companies.
Targeted tax revenues will amount to 25 million euros per year, 60% of which will go to municipalities where mining is carried out, the ministry said.
