Geforce GTX 990M new flagship for gaming laptops

There is more to pick up in the Maxwell architecture. After Nvidia introduced a whole family of graphics processors for virtually all price ranges, one or two laggards are on the way. In August, the Geforce GTX 950 graphics card arrives for gamers on a budget, but towards the autumn or winter, a new performance model is expected, this time for laptops.

Notebookreview reports that the Chinese computer manufacturer Hasee is gossiping about nothing less than the hitherto unknown Geforce GTX 990M. Behind the name is a new flagship based on the well-known graphics processor GM204, which is used in today’s Geforce GTX 980M.

The new graphics part is known as the N16E-GXX and is said to be significantly more powerful than its predecessor. Nvidia may well choose to activate all 2,048 CUDA cores, up from 1,536 computing units in the Geforce GTX 980M. At the same time, a variable TDP value is expected from 100 all the way up to 185 W.

The latter points to the fact that Nvidia gives computer manufacturers free rein to tune the clock frequencies. The new, more powerful circuit should be intended for soldering directly to the motherboard. This is to open up for larger and more efficient cooling solutions than would be possible with traditional plug-in cards according to the form factor MXM.

The Geforce GTX 990M is expected to arrive sometime in the fourth and final quarter of the year.
