GeForce RTX 3000 Ampere, the best launch ever for Nvidia

Many fans are still unable to buy them due to low availability and skyrocketing prices, despite the video cards GeForce RTX 3000 represent a great success for Nvidia. Not only did the company revise its second quarter revenue upwards, but at an investor conference it stated that the debut of the Ampere cards represents the best launch ever. Of course, it must be premised that Nvidia does not say – and perhaps it does not know for sure – how many cards have ended up in the hands of players or miners, but the overall figure is still worthy of interest.

Comparing the first months of availability of the Ampere GPUs with the similar periods relating to Turing and Pascal (indicated in this case in 18 weeks), we see how the new cards have reached more than double the final sales of Turing solutions, proof of a demand that is certainly unprecedented compared to previous series and despite the skyrocketing prices.

Forgetting the existence of miners for a moment, a graph with the market share on Steam six months after the debut however shows that the market share of the RTX 3000 GPUs is double that achieved in the same period by the RTX 2000 solutions. The latest Steam survey highlighted how gamers have specifically targeted the GeForce RTX 3070.

The third graph of the slide shows how the spending budget of enthusiasts is higher, with more people willing to buy cards over $ 300. The average selling price of Ampere cards is $ 360 and this is due to the fact that only the highest-end models were presented in the first months of launch.

In another slide Nvidia defines laptops with GeForce GPUs “the console with the fastest selling rate”, showing a 20% growth in the Compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2015 to 2020, surpassing last year’s PlayStation figure.

These numbers, however, have ample room for improvement according to Nvidia, if you take into account the fact that only 15% of the GeForce installed base is based on a recent GPU from the RTX range. The upcoming arrival of new GeForce RTX 3000 GPUs in the mobile field to cover lower price ranges than the 2000 series, such as the RTX 3050, will certainly allow to increase the installed base.
