“Geforce RTX 3000 shortage for a few more months”

The autumn of 2020 has been a party for the technology enthusiast with a host of major launches from the giants Intel, Apple, Microsoft, Sony, AMD and Nvidia. The graphics cards launched from the latter two companies show real performance life and this at reasonable prices – in theory. The availability of the products is, however, very low and on each launch day the shelves echoed empty shortly after the start of sales.

Nvidia’s Geforce RTX 3080 was the first consumer-oriented Ampere card to be released and with the launch date of September 15, it now has over two months on its neck, with continued low availability in stores. On October 5, Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang announced that the shortage extends throughout the year, but now Nvidia predicts that a few more months of scarce RTX 3000 assets are to be expected.

Given industry-wide capacity constraints and long cycle times, it may take a few more months for product availability to catch up with demand.

In connection with the presentation of the quarterly report for Q3, Nvidia’s CFO Colette Kress comments on the situation, which she believes can last “a few more months”. With the end of the year in sight, this thus indicates that even the first month or months of 2021 will be tough for those who are hungry for the Geforce RTX 3000.

According to the company, the reason for the low supply is not problems on the manufacturing side, but rather that demand far exceeds the expected level. The capacity for production is also more limited, due to the current situation in the world. Despite this, Huang adds that the Geforce RTX 3000 series’ production rate has increased very rapidly – among the fastest increases ever. What this means in actual volumes is not mentioned, however.

It thus remains to be seen when demand and supply really radiate, and the same goes for AMD’s fresh Radeon RX 6000 cards and Ryzen 5000 processors. Rumor has it that Nvidia will already expand the product portfolio in December with the slightly simpler Geforce RTX 3060 Ti, but whether the product will then be available on a broad front can only be speculated on.
