Geforce RTX 3060 is equipped with a heavily scaled-down RTX 3070 Ti circuit

Releasing graphics cards in different price and performance classes has more advantages than companies being able to offer devices by person. Namely, more expensive graphics circuits can often be scaled down and deactivated to function in the same way as simpler graphics cards, which means that even partially defective circuits can be used. Nvidia’s Geforce RTX 3000 series contains the three circuits GA102, GA104 and GA106, where the center variant is used in Geforce RTX 3070 Ti, RTX 3070 and RTX 3060 Ti.

The Geforce RTX 3060 is currently the only dedicated graphics card to use the GA106, but now there are reports that the GA104 is looking into the mid-range card. It is Techpowerup that noted the graphics circuit’s new area of use and added it to the site’s extensive database of circuits. It is clear that the GA104 variant of the graphics card retains the same specifications as before, which means 3,584 CUDA cores, 28 RT cores and 12 GB of GDDR6 memory over a 192-bit wide memory bus.

* The GA106 graphics circuit has 3,840 CUDA cores, which are used in the Geforce RTX 3060 for laptops.

The Geforce RTX 3070 Ti uses the full-scale variant of the circuit with 6,144 CUDA cores, which means that over 40 percent is disabled when it takes up space in the middle class. Given the glaring shortage of graphics cards and circuits, it is most likely not an overlay that is artificially limited, but rather variants that do not work well enough to fit in the RTX 3060 Ti or RTX 3070. GA104 is also just over 42 percent larger than GA106 – a circuit change that thus saves a lot of silicon from the dustbin.

In theory, there should be no difference between GA104 and GA106-equipped RTX 3060 cards, but circuit changes of a similar kind have previously shown that the larger circuits can be slightly more current-thirsty. The industry has flagged that the supply of GA106 circuits in particular will be tightened even more, at least until the end of September, which is why the introduction of GA104 may possibly make it easier to keep volumes up.

It remains to be seen whether Geforce RTX 3060 cards with the larger circuit will appear on Swedish store shelves in the future. With the almost identical specifications, manufacturers do not learn to trumpet the changes that have taken place under the radiator, which is why graphics card buyers can only see with the card mounted which circuit it is. However, Videocardz believes that the GA104 circuit’s deviations in TDP value may limit sales to China.
