Geforce RTX 3060 shows the front feet in 3DMark and Unigine Superposition

With the launch of Nvidia’s mid-range card Geforce RTX 3060 around the corner, leaks, unintentional or intentional, are more or less inevitable. What we already know is that the graphics card is equipped with 12 GB of GDDR6-type memory and that the graphics circuit bears the model name GA106 – the smallest circuit in the “Ampere” family so far.

As usual, Videocardz is out in good time with performance figures for the upcoming series, where an RTX 3060 has been subjected to tests in the form of 3DMark and Unigine Superposition. In the synthetic test software, most subtests were run, where selected preset in Superposition was 1080P Extreme. Also the “Ampere” family’s parade number ray tracingperformance was measured in 3DMark Port Royal.

The biggest improvement compared to the previous generation of graphics cards is found in just ray-tracing-focused 3DMark test Port Royal, where RTX 3060 snaps not only the cards in the RTX 2060 series on the nose, but also RTX 2070. The margins are sometimes extremely small, but when all results are summed up, the newcomer is only a few percent behind both RTX 2070 and RTX 2060 Super.

Compared to cards from AMD, Videocardz has included the Radeon RX 5700 XT in its comparisons, a card that is on average 13 percent faster than the RTX 3060. This reference point is interesting as AMD’s upcoming Radeon RX 6700 XT is essentially expected to correspond to the RX 5700. XT, albeit with lower memory bandwidth.

In addition to improvements made ray tracing over the previous generation, the Geforce RTX 3060 will also be the company’s first graphics card with support for Resizable BAR, a PCI Express feature that exposes the graphics card’s memory to the rest of the system. In addition, the new will be the first to fall victim to Nvidia’s new policy against cryptocurrency mining, where the card senses mining-loads and reduces performance.

What the situation with access looks like remains to be seen – but Danish Proshop has flagged for access of 230 copies, even below the recommended price of SEK 3,650.
