Gfxbench 5.0 is a performance test for DirectX 12, Volcano, Metal and Virtual Reality

Gfxbench is a test suite that allows users to measure processor and graphics performance for different devices. The suite is available for mobile devices with Android or iOS, as well as Windows, OS X and Linux on the PC side. Kishonti, the company behind the test suite, is now presenting the fifth version.

Among the main news is that the test suite uses the new graphics interfaces DirectX 12, Vulkan and Metal to evaluate performance. All frameworks are so-called low-level interfaces, which means that there are fewer control mechanisms between the code running in the operating system and the hardware it is running against. The fact that support for all three is available means that Gfxbench 5.0 will be the first test suite to cover all major platforms.

A beta version of the test became available last fall where a spaceship destroyed a farm at night, testing the units’ ability to calculate lighting and shadows. In the latest version, a new scene called Aztek Ruins has been added where testing of global lighting is in focus. Gfxbench 5.0 also includes test functions for virtual reality, where, among other things, image updating and latency are tested.

According to developers Kishonti, the demonstration will use over 6,000 system calls to demonstrate the improved processor utilization of the new frameworks. Gfxbench 5.0 is still under development and is currently used only by Kishonti’s development partner. It is not clear when the sharp launch will take place.
