How to set a Slack status – Easy Steps

Instant messaging apps like Slack give everyone in a workspace a quick and easy way to communicate with others. Unlike email, it is assumed that there will be no delay in getting a response since the other person is online. This is rarely the case. Messages may go unread or unanswered if the recipient is busy.

Establish a slack state

You can set your Slack status to busy and you can snooze your notifications if you’re away, but Slack has better information-rich options that you can use to set as your status. For example, if you are in a meeting, you can set the status to speak and set the status to expire automatically.

How to set a Slack status

To set your Slack status as absent;

1. Click on your profile icon in the upper right.
2. Select the Set Away Status option.

To set a Slack status;

1. Click on your profile icon in the upper right.
2. Select Update your status.
3. Select one of the automatic status messages: In a meeting, Sick, On vacation, etc.
4. Change when you want to clear the status and click Save.

If none of Slack’s default messages are suitable, you can create a custom message.

1. Click on your profile icon in the upper right.
2. Enter a custom status message
3. Add an emoji if you want.
4. Open the Delete After drop-down menu and select when Slack should automatically delete the message.
5. Check the ‘Pause Notifications’ option if you want to pause notifications while this status is active.

Pause notifications

Slack users can pause notifications without tying them to a particular state. To pause notifications in Slack;

1. Click on your profile icon in the upper right.
2. Select the Pause Notifications option from the menu.
3. Select a preset from the submenu or select Custom to select a custom date and time until notifications are paused.
4. You can schedule when notifications are paused / resumed automatically by clicking Set a notification schedule.

It can be inferred that being “online” is ready to respond to ten different people at once. Unfortunately, you cannot configure the notification settings per user or per channel.
