How to use FaceTime on Android – Easy Steps

How to use FaceTime on Android

FaceTime is an Apple service and it is highly unlikely that users will be able to initiate a FaceTime call on a non-Apple device or without having at least one device. Solutions have been created that allow users to initiate a FaceTime call, but end up being blocked by Apple. That said, Apple has made it so that you can join a FaceTime call from any device, Apple or non-Apple, and this includes Android devices.

FaceTime en Android

You cannot initiate a FaceTime call on Android, however if you have a modern browser like Chrome for Android installed on your device, you can join a FaceTime call. The only condition is that the call must be initiated from an Apple device with iOS 15 or macOS 12.0.1, or later.

Join the FaceTime call on Android

To join a FaceTime call on Android, you need a link. This link must be sent by the person who invites you to a call.

  1. Tap on the FaceTime link that has been shared (it is better to open it in a browser like Chrome for Android rather than open it in an app browser, for example the FaceBook app browser).
  2. Enter the name with which you want to join the call.
  3. Allow the browser to access your microphone and camera.
  4. Touch the Join button.
  5. Wait for them to let you in on the call.

Chrome for Android will allow you to join a FaceTime call, and Firefox for Android may also support this. Little known browsers, for example Dolphin, may or may not support the call. Similarly, if you are using a device / manufacturer specific browser, for example browsers on Samsung phones, it may be a good idea to install Chrome for Android instead.

You can check if a standard browser supports the call by visiting the FaceTime link on it. If you support the call, you will see an option to enter your name.

conclusion

FaceTime doesn’t really compete with video conferencing tools like Zoom or Microsoft Teams. Compete more with personal video calling solutions like Skype. FaceTime manages to get by even though it has a restricted operating system because the call quality is excellent. Apple keeps it unique because it’s a strong feature of their operating systems, but also because both FaceTime and iMessage provide encryption that few other devices provide or enforce at the hardware level. It might seem like a good idea for FaceTime to run on Android, but if a device can’t offer the same level of privacy that users expect on a FaceTime call made from an iPhone or Mac, it downgrades the product itself.
