Intel CEO visited TSMC to secure more space on its production lines

Known for the high yields of its production lines, TSMC has become increasingly competitive among the big names in the world of technology. Among them is Intel, whose CEO Pat Gelsinger visited Taiwan this week. to hold a face-to-face meeting with the main executives of the manufacturer.

Gelsinger’s brief visit was aimed at securing larger reserves for TSMC’s 7-nanometer production line and other more mature nodes.

This is part of Intel’s strategy to maintain its launch roadmap and business goals.

While Intel has traditionally taken it upon itself to release its own CPUs, the company has broadened its strategy in recent years. ARC Alchemist GPUs, for example, are based on the production capabilities of the Taiwanese foundry, which also fulfills orders from competitors such as NVIDIA and AMD.

The meeting between the shareholders of Gelsinger and TSMC is not necessarily related to the desire to get more modern CPU and GPU units.

The focus of the director of Intel is mature nodes, especially those used in the server segment.

Intel product shipments are lower than other years due to the lack of components such as LAN chips and other parts. Therefore, it makes sense for Intel to seek the support of manufacturers capable of meeting this demand. After his visit to TSMC, the executive traveled to Japan to meet with representatives of several companies, including Tokyo Electron.

This is Gelsinger’s second recent visit to Taiwan, a country considered difficult to access due to its strict policies in the fight against COVID-19. In December, the executive visited the country on a diplomatic mission, trying to undo the bad impression left by his statements that the country was not a reliable supplier of semiconductors given the Chinese interest in its territories.
