Intel driver gossiping about dedicated graphics cards with Gen12 architecture

When it comes to dedicated graphics cards, AMD and Nvidia are the giants in the market, but by 2020, Intel will also enter the market with the “Xe” family. The series is said to be a versatile solution used in integrated graphics circuits, but also in a scaled-up version in dedicated graphics cards for games and data centers.

At present, quite a bit is known about the upcoming cards, but concept images for the consumer-oriented cards have shown. The company’s Chinese graphics division has also talked about support for hardware accelerated ray tracing, something that is said to be missing for the first cards but is added to later models. In a now removed driver from Intel, graphics circuits and graphics cards are visible.

The driver repeatedly mentions the letter combination “RKL”, which stands for “Rocket Lake” which is another upcoming processor family made of 14 nanometers. Together with these, integrated graphics parts are listed with 16 or 32 calculation units, where the suffix “Pro” indicates another series.

The biggest news, however, is a series of products that Intel has not yet revealed, with graphics referred to as Gen12. First out on the upcoming architecture “Sunny Cove” is the family “Ice Lake”, and in addition to manufacturing at 10 nanometers one of the biggest news is the Gen11 graphics, which reportedly means a real boost compared to the current Gen9.

However, this is not about circuits integrated in processors, but the names “DG1” and “DG2” gossip about dedicated graphics solutions (English. Discrete graphics). Furthermore, it can be seen that these are three models with numbers that probably indicate the number of calculation units, where the levels 128, 256 and 512 are located.

Hothardware believes that this should correspond to entry-level graphics cards and variants in the middle segment, but what it means in actual performance is impossible to say. It is worth mentioning that the Xe cards that will be released in 2020 will have the graphics architecture with the code name “Arctic Sound” under the hood. Whether Gen12 is a synonym or intended for later launch remains to be seen.
