Intel Introduces ATX 3.0 and ATX12VO 2.0 Standards for Next-Generation GPUs

Intel released the specification details for the new ATX 3.0 power supplies, the biggest upgrade since ATX 2.0 back in 2003. We are talking about PCIe Gen 5.0 the next connector standard that has to offer up to 600W per connector.

The manufacturer also changed its ATX12VO specification, which should be used as a guide by the industry in the production of power supplies and motherboards. Comes with the new 12VHPWR connectorwhich includes sideband signals that allow the power supply to communicate the limit it can deliver to any PCIe 5.0 GPU.

ATX12VO brings the new I_PSU% function to desktop computers, building on solutions already implemented by Intel in its servers and small form factor (SFF) systems. According to the company, the novelty should primarily benefit original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), who will have more options for PSU sizes to meet the requirements of feature-rich systems.

The 12+4-pin 1VHPWR connector can deliver 150W, 300W, 450W, or 600W of power to a GPU.

The new standard should be essential for the new generation of graphics processors, keeping up with the ever-increasing power demands of high-end components.

The new ATX12VO standard should also help the PC industry adapt to new energy efficiency requirements that some agencies are demanding. Like, for example, that starting in 2021, California will ban the sale of some OEM-made machines that exceed certain consumption levels, which includes models like the Alienware Aurora.

“ The new specifications will have a positive impact on power and performance improvements in all segments for desktop PCs”, promises Intel.

Surely in the coming months we will be seeing several products with these characteristics.
