“Lack of Geforce RTX 3000 continues beyond the first quarter of 2021”

The year 2020 has not been gracious to anyone trying to get hold of a new sought-after technology product. The current pandemic around COVID-19 has meant delays in various stages of production, which together with high pressure on launched products has led to waiting times of several months. The graphics cards in Nvidia’s Geforce RTX 3000 series are suffering from these delays, and according to the company’s CFO Colette Kress, the worries look set to continue into the next year.

We do have supply constraints and our supply constraints do expand past what we are seeing in terms of wafers and silicon, but yes some constrains are in substrates and components. We continue to work during the quarter on our supply and we believe though that demand will probably exceed supply in Q4 for overall gaming. – Colette Kress, finanschef Nvidia

The statement is made during the major bank Credit Suisse’s annual technology conference, reports Tom’s Hardware. Colette Kress states there that Nvidia is struggling with shortcomings in several parts of the production, where everything from silicon wafers to substrates and delivered circuits from the manufacturer Samsung is hard strained. As a result, she predicts that the situation around Nvidia’s new graphics card will not stabilize in a few months.

It has previously been reported that the circuit manufacturer Samsung has problems reaching a high degree of functional circuits (eng. Yield) on the company’s 8-nanometer technology, and that Nvidia therefore plans to move part of the production to TSMC’s 7 nanometers in 2021. Then Colette Kress states that there is a lack of access to several different components that make up the production, such a move would not fully solve the problems with the production.

We do expect it probably to take a couple months for it to catch up to demand, but at this time, it is really difficult for us to quantify. So, we stay focused on trying to get our parts to the market for this very important holiday season. Each day things continue to improve. But before the end of the quarter, we will be able to provide some more information.

However, Nvidia is optimistic about being able to stabilize the relationship between supply and demand in the coming months, and reveals more details about the current situation at the end of the company’s fourth quarter, which runs until January 2021. Then it remains to be seen if the forecast for next spring better than in the autumn of 2020, where European retailers such as Proshop reported that they had received between 7 and 10 percent of ordered graphics cards of the Geforce RTX 3090, RTX 3080 and RTX 3070 models.

For those who wanted to shop from the competitor AMD, it has looked even more difficult, as Proshop’s German stores report that they have received zero partner-made graphics cards in the Radeon RX 6000 series. The situation for the reference cards looks a little better, but even there it is about modest quantities. Probably AMD also suffers from strained access for various components in the manufacturing stage, as the company in addition to the Radeon RX 6000 series and Ryzen 5000 processors is also behind the system circuits in the game consoles Xbox Series X / S and Playstation 5.

When Nvidia expects the availability of the Geforce RTX 3000 series to stabilize, it will be announced in January 2021, roughly in the same vein as the company is expected to present upgraded models with the addition Ti in the product name.
