Nvidia confirms Ampere Founder’s Cooling Solution and Power Supply

On September 1, Nvidia tears off a special Geforce event where the graphics cards in the Geforce 3000 “Ampere” family are expected to be unveiled. It seems that the event is quite packed as the company today chooses to lift the veil for the cooling solution and power supply they apply in the Founder’s Edition variants of the Ampere cards.

The review deals with the important pillars for cooling and power management in the new reference design. The company has optimized airflow over the graphics card circuits with a solution where dual fans take in air from the surroundings, transfer heat to it and push out the hot air more efficiently than before. The design with double fans that can be seen in the renderings confirms the previously leaked cooler solutions.

Part of the more efficient cooling is the mechanical structure of the radiator. New this time is that Nvidia uses low-profile type leaf springs, which gives more space to the back of the graphics card. The electrical efficiency of the circuits has also been improved, with the use of a new 12-pin power connector making the power supply more compact without affecting capacity.

All upcoming graphics cards from Nvidia will use this 12-pin connector, and the products include an adapter for 8-pin PCI Express connections from the power supply at no extra cost. The fact that the cards are backwards compatible also means that the 12-pin connection does not add extra capacity, which means support for a maximum of 2 × 150 watts over two 8-pin connections.

Nvidia’s Geforce 3000 event kicks off on September 1 at 18.00 Swedish time.
