NVIDIA confirms data theft with a cyber attack

NVIDIA officially confirmed today that it was the victim of a cyberattack that took place on February 23. The company had not revealed details about the incident, but now claims that the Lapsus$ group was able to steal various data, but the action did not harm its daily operations.

The video card maker also said its investigations show that attackers failed to deploy ransomware in NVIDIA environment or that is related to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

“We are aware that the threat actor has taken employee credentials and some Nvidia proprietary information from our systems and has begun leaking it online. Our team is working to analyze that information. We do not anticipate any disruption to our business or our ability to serve our customers as a result of the incident,” the company said.

Criminals have published the source code of DLSS

At the same time that NVIDIA publicly acknowledged that sensitive data was stolen, members of Lapsus$ began distributing some of the fruits of their actions over the Internet. They released the source code for DLSS, a proprietary technology that uses Tensor Cores to enable enhancement in games.

On their public Telegram channel, the cybercriminals also assured that they already have access to information about the new generations of cards and new architectures from the manufacturer.

Lapsus$ claims to have code on its hands that will disable the LHR system, used by the company to limit the mining capacity of its GPUs.

“Security is an ongoing process that we take very seriously at Nvidia, and we invest daily in the protection and quality of our code and products,” NVIDIA said.
