Nvidia hires Samsung for manufacturing at 14 nanometers

After more than four years on the same 28-nanometer technology from TSMC, AMD and Nvidia were able to take the step over to new nodes with the architectures Polaris and Pascal, respectively. For the first time in many years, the companies went their separate ways, when Nvidia faithfully stayed with TSMC and its new 16-nanometer technology. AMD, for its part, chose to switch to 14 nanometers and transfer production to Samsung and Globalfoundries.

It now appears that Nvidia can also jump on the 14-nanometer train and abandon TSMC with a future generation of graphics cards. The South Korean newspaper Chosun Biz reports that Samsung has won a contract with Nvidia for the production of a new set of graphics circuits, primarily based on the Pascal architecture.

It is interesting that the graphics circuits will go into production towards the end of the year and that there is talk of Pascal, which may mean that a refresh of the current generation is on the menu. Another possibility is that the agreement runs even further in the future and that the next large architecture, Volta, can be manufactured at 14 nanometers.

Samsung has declined to comment on the report and Nvidia has not yet commented.
