Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super review

The same RTX 2070 – only super-charged.

Verdict: The Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super offers better performance along with a lower price tag, which makes the graphics card more attractive to the general user.

pros:

  • Founder Edition is cheaper than the original 2070;
  • More CUDA cores
  • Ray-traced 1440p gaming

Minuses:

  • Still expensive graphics card;
  • The Founder Edition is very heavy;

When Nvidia Turing first hit shelves in October 2018, it promised high performance along with ray tracing in games. And while this series spawned some incredible graphics cards like the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, some mid-range graphics cards, especially the RTX 2070, have not fared so well.

Fortunately, Nvidia is here to remedy the situation, at least a little, with the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super graphics card intended to replace the existing Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070. Fortunately, Nvidia offers performance improvements, trite name aside. However, we still wonder where this graphics card was when the Nvidia Turing was first introduced.

| GEFORCE RTX 2070 SUPER PRICES

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super goes on sale after AMD Navi, in which the closest competitor, both in terms of performance and price, is the AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT, which costs $ 399 (26,000r + VAT).

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 originally came out in October 2018 for $ 499 (RUR 32,500 + VAT), while the Founder Edition cost RUR 7,000 more or so. Quite expensive, especially when compared to the previous generation Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070.

However, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super will launch on July 9th, with the Founder Edition priced at the same $ 499 as last year’s model. We’re not sure how the aftermarket will handle the RTX 2070, but we’re confident you’ll find great deals.

| GEFORCE RTX 2070 SUPER FEATURES & CHIPSET

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super takes advantage of the successful Nvidia Turing architecture and makes it more accessible to a wide range of users. The card now uses the 2304 CUDA cores of the existing Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070, and also adds up to 2560 cores of its own, along with increasing the clock speed to 1770 MHz.

It is currently unknown if the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super has more RT and Tensor Cores than the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070, but the graphics card promises better ray tracing performance. Both architectural improvements, however, come with an increase in power consumption to 215W.

The only thing that really stays the same between the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super and the original RTX 2070 is memory – you still get 8GB of GDDR6 VRAM running at 14Gbps.

However, we will have to talk about the design of the video card. It still shares a common profile with existing Nvidia Turing Founders Edition graphics cards, but we now have a chrome trim under the logo, which makes the graphics card look brighter. This is probably a pointless decision, unless you have a transparent case that allows you to admire the card from the outside.

Sadly, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super is still heavy, which will require a motherboard with additional PCIe support.

| GEFORCE RTX 2070 SUPER: PERFORMANCE

Due to the increased clock speed and more CUDA cores, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super should be much more powerful than the vanilla RTX 2070.

For example, in Metro Exodus, we managed to get over 70 frames per second (FPS) most of the time at 1440p. We switched all graphics options to Ultra, enabled ray-traced global illumination and DLSS, while maintaining a smooth gameplay.

We also played Shadow of the Tomb Raider, again with ray tracing and DLSS support, where the performance wasn’t all that great. Of course, the video card has become better in comparison with the original model, but in the game the average speed remained around 50 frames per second.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE TEST SYSTEM

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 3900X (12-core, 70MB Cache, up to 4.6GHz)
  • RAM: 16GB G.Skill TridentZ Royale DDR4 (3400MHz)
  • Motherboard: ASRock Taichi X570;
  • Source of power: Corsair RM850x;
  • Memory: 2 Gigabyte Aorus M.2 SSD (NVMe PCIe 4.0 x4);
  • Housing: Corsair Crystal Series 570X RGB;
  • Operating system: Windows 10;
Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super review

All the power of the RTX 2070.

The significant performance improvement is reflected in our tests as well. For example, in 3DMark FireStrike Ultra, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super demonstrates a significant performance increase over the original RTX 2070 Super – 5942 points versus 5532 points for the latter. And in TimeSpy, one of the most popular video tests, the RTX 2070 Super returns 10,153 points against the 8805 RTX 2070.

In fact, there are some scenarios where the performance of the RTX 2070 Super encroaches on the territory of the RTX 2080. For example, the RTX 2070 Super can run Metro Exodus at 4K with Ultra graphics settings, offering a playable 35fps when the RTX 2080 is under the same conditions. gives 38 FPS. You are getting close to the performance of the RTX 2080 at $ 1,000 less

So while we’re not going to recommend the new graphics card for 4K gaming – since 35-40fps is far from ideal, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super should be a great graphics card for gaming at 1440p. In fact, if the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super came in the form of the original 2070, the Nvidia Turing would be the most compelling series of all time.

| GEFORCE RTX 2070 SUPER REVIEW: SUMMING UP

Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super costs $ 499 (32500r + VAT). With improved performance and better pricing than Nvidia Turing at release. You get more performance for your money and we will never complain about that.

It would have been nice to see this level of performance in the same price segment when Nvidia Turing was released in September 2019, but it’s good that graphics cards have reached us at least now. This is probably one of the best Nvidia graphics cards for those looking to play at 1440p with high frame rates.

And, if you’ve already invested in tracing the best Nvidia, you probably don’t need to pay attention to a new graphics card. Still, anyone who’s been waiting for a low-power 1440p graphics card has no better time to move to ray tracing.
