Nvidia Geforce RTX 3090 gets performance figures in 3DMark tests

Fresh foldable mobile phones, price information for game consoles and the Geforce RTX 3080 are just a few of the highlights of the intense hardware party that has taken place in recent weeks. Nvidia’s Ampere graphics card may be the absolute highlight for many hardware enthusiasts and more news on the topic is expected soon, when the series’ flagship debuts on September 24.

► Nvidia Geforce RTX 3080 “Ampere” – an unusually large performance life

The card is called Geforce RTX 3090 and is equipped with 10,496 CUDA cores and 24 GB of GDDR6X-type graphics memory, with memory speeds of 19.5 Gbps over a 384-bit wide memory bus. Earlier this week, SweClockers was able to state that the newcomer RTX 3080 by a good margin pinches the performance crown in the consumer class from the Turing family’s top model RTX 2080 Ti. Videocardz now reveals performance figures for RTX 3090, which show that the next change of throne will also take place with information.

The technology site publishes an image representing results from the synthetic but popular 3DMark test Time Spy from UL Benchmarks. The images also confirm the use of the as yet unreleased graphics card, as well as associated graphics points in 1440p and the 4K UHD-resolved Time Spy Extreme: 20,387 and 10,328 points. Videocardz compares this with the Geforce RTX 3080 with reference frequencies, which they believe reach 17,175 and 8,596 graphics points.

In percentage terms, the performance jump is thus 19 and 20 percent, respectively, but it is worth mentioning that the comparative Geforce RTX 3080 levels are relatively low. However, they are in line with the total points that, for example, SweClocker’s test of Nvidia’s reference – clocked Founder’s Edition card shows, which means that the site may weigh graphics points against total points.

In SweClocker’s test, 18,351 and 9,113 graphics points were achieved, respectively, which translates into an increase of just over 11 and 13 percent – an advantage that decreases when factory overclocked models are mixed into the game. A proportional increase in performance with the extra CUDA cores will thus not necessarily be the case with the Geforce RTX 3090. As expected, the performance life is also much smaller than the price increase, where the recommended price more than doubles – from SEK 7,825 to SEK 16,800 for Founder’s Edition.

Videocardz has also received tips on more 3DMark tests in the form of Fire Strike and the Extreme and Ultra variants of this, but also that ray tracing-trial Port Royal. The first three are also included in SweClocker’s test suite, and the Geforce RTX 3090 increases in graphics points here weigh in at 2.9, 12.8 and 14.4 percent, respectively.

Whether the early performance figures are in line with official and independent tests remains to be seen. These tests make their debut no later than September 24 because the card then lands on store shelves, but if the situation regarding availability and demand is similar to the Geforce RTX 3080, RTX 3090 speculators must be quick on the buy button.
