Nvidia is said to put down Geforce RTX 3000 cards with more graphics memory

Nvidia unveiled the Geforce RTX 3000 series on September 1, 2020, and shortly after the presentation, reports began to appear that the company was planning upgraded models with more graphics memory. Although the specifications for the Geforce RTX 3080 and RTX 3070 were impressive in several respects, the memory volumes of 10 and 8 GB of graphics memory, respectively, were lower than some speculators expected.

Anyone who had wanted to see larger amounts of memory had hopes raised when rumors quickly stated that Nvidia is planning upgraded models of Geforce RTX 3080 and RTX 3070 with the suffix Ti in the product name. These models would reportedly take the step up to 20 GB of graphics memory with the Geforce RTX 3080, and 16 GB with the RTX 3070. However, new reports claim that Nvidia has set plans for these upgrades.

The information comes from Videocardz, whose sources claim that Nvidia has been in contact with partner manufacturers (AIB) to inform them that Geforce RTX 3080 20 GB and RTX 3070 16 GB are no longer relevant, and that they should therefore set up plans for product development and launch. However, the report does not state any reason why the plans have been canceled.

One speculation from the undersigned is that the limited availability of Geforce RTX 3000 circuits is behind the decision. According to Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang, there will be a continued weak supply of Geforce RTX 3000 cards until the beginning of 2021, and it may simply be that the company does not have the capacity to launch a number of new models when they do not succeed in producing enough graphics circuits for the current layout.

According to previous reports, Nvidia planned to launch the Geforce RTX 3070 Ti with 16 GB of graphics memory by the end of 2020, to counter AMD’s launch of the Radeon RX 6000 series. The latter is rumored to offer a solid amount of memory as one of the selling points, where even models under the Geforce RTX 3080’s performance segment are rumored to get 12 GB of GDDR6 memory.

When it comes to an alleged decision on an alleged launch, these data are highly speculative, but anyone who had hoped to introduce Nvidia’s Ampere with more graphics memory in the rig this autumn is at least justified. Whether AMD will invest in large amounts of graphics memory will be clear on October 28, 2020, when the Radeon RX 6000 series is unveiled. SweClockers live-watches the event as usual.
