Nvidia visar ray tracing i realtid i Battlefield V

During this year’s edition of the Game Developers Conference, or GDC, much focus was placed on ray tracing and rendering of it in real time. The technology has been around for a long time, but requires a lot of power and managing this in real time has long been seen as a distant goal.

One of those who has invested in this is Nvidia, which has developed a technology they call RTX, which they demonstrated during the recent press conference held in Cologne. The technology is implemented in the company’s upcoming graphics card in the Geforce RTX series and Nvidia showed both games and pre-rendered images that demonstrated this.

During the event, the technology was shown in a number of game titles, including DICE first-person shooter Battlefield V. In the clip that was demonstrated, a large difference between light and shadows can be seen, where, among other things, mouth flames are reflected on surfaces such as puddles and vehicles.

To demonstrate the difference between when RTX is used and not, an image was also displayed with the technology turned off and on. The big difference is reflections and transparency, which becomes clearer when RTX is turned on and light from different directions is realistically reflected on other surfaces.

In addition to Battlefield V, a number of other game titles are mentioned that support the technology, where the total number is over 20. The list includes the upcoming games Metro Exodus and Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

The rendering is made possible by the new RT cores, which with the help of AI can detect errors and fill in incomplete information during the rendering process, something that will speed this up considerably. According to Nvidia itself, a Turing-based graphics card can render the Star Wars demo shown at about 22 frames per second, while the Geforce GTX 1080 Ti lands at just over three frames per second.

Nvidia Geforce RTX 2080 Ti, RTX 2080 and RTX 2070 are now available for pre-booking via Nvidia’s website and Swedish retailers, and will be launched sharply on 20 September. The launch date for the Geforce RTX 2070 is still unknown, but is expected later in October.

The prices for the graphics cards in the reference version amount to SEK 13,999 for RTX 2080 Ti, while RTX 2080 and RTX 2070 end up at SEK 9,199 and SEK 6,899, respectively.
