Nvidia’s upscaling technology DLSS becomes free plugin for Unreal Engine 4

In search of higher resolutions without compromising the frame rate (FPS), Nvidia is investing in Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) technology, which is a combined anti-aliasing and scaling technology. So far, the technology has only been used in games developed in close collaboration with Nvidia, but now it is considered mature enough to be released.

The Nvidia website states that the graphics giant has released an add-on, plugin, to the popular and widely used game engine Unreal Engine 4. In practice, this means that developers using version 4.25 or 4.26 of the game engine can easily implement DLSS without Nvidia’s express approval.

The technology is based on machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) to scale up a lower resolution to a higher one, with the goal of maintaining image quality. This is because Nvidia in its server parks constantly calculates upscaling of images and over time learns how to scale images in the best way without noticeable visual deterioration.

This is combined by local calculations performed on the Tensor cores in the Geforce RTX 2000 and RTX 3000 series. As it is all about hardware functions in Nvidia’s graphics chips, it is a proprietary technology that is not supported by graphics cards from AMD.
