Polaris is the code name for AMD’s next graphics architecture

On December 22, 2011, AMD introduced the Radeon HD 7970, which in addition to being the first out of 28 nanometers, introduced the all-new Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture. This is still relevant today apart from a number of changes, but in 2016 it is time for the successor whose name has now been revealed.

Chinese Hwbattle now publishes a picture that reveals that the name of the successor to Graphics Core Next is Polaris, better known as the North Star. In addition to the name, it appears that the goal of the architecture is energy efficiency, which will make it possible to use Polaris in all types of devices.

In addition to the name, AMD has also revealed details about the next generation of graphics cards, which in addition to HDMI 2.0 will be the first to come out with support for Displayport 1.3. The company’s high-ranking representatives have on several occasions spoken of doubling energy efficiency compared to the current generation, which in addition to the new architecture can also be attributed to the transition to 3D transistors.

Despite the fact that AMD is abandoning Graphics Core Next as a marketing name, it does not look like Polaris will be a completely new design. What is said to be a leaked presentation published by Videocardz claims that Polaris is in fact the fourth generation Graphics Core Next.

The graphics family Arctic Islands with the associated architecture Polaris is believed to find out during the second half of the year.
