Qualcomm will announce today the SOC Snapdragon G3x for portable consoles, its development kit was designed together with Razer

Tonight Qualcomm will hold its annual Snapdragon Tech Summit, and in addition to announcing the successor to the 888. It seems that there will be an extra surprise: New slides leaked by Videocardz confirm that Qualcomm will launch tonight a SOC for portable consoles called Snapdragon G3x, along with a kit developed with Razer that companies can use as the basis for their designs.

Apparently in the slides, the Snapdragon G3x will be focused from the ground up for portable consoles, and will support Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, 5G mmWave, 120Hz OLED displays with HDR, Snapdragon Sound, USB-C connectivity plus DisplayPort over USB- C for the connection of virtual reality devices, support for haptic technologies to increase immersion, and even 1080p cameras to stream from the console. Clearly it will be a totally complete device to play, although there is more.

Qualcomm’s support for this sector will undoubtedly increase the number of portable consoles that will reach the market, although we do not see it as a competition for the Nintendo Switch or the future Steam Deck since it aims more at streaming video games either from services such as Xbox Cloud or Nvidia GeForce Now, or from our own PC with technologies such as Nvidia Gamestream, and not the rendering of games on the console itself. In addition, when using Android it is not possible to run the latest AAA games by itself, so this dependence on an external system will undoubtedly limit its use and place it in a segment apart from that of Nintendo and Nvidia consoles.

It will be interesting to hear the full details from Qualcomm tonight. The Snapdragon Tech Summit event will only begin at 8:00 p.m. in Argentina, so this announcement will be made quite late.
