Radeon “Fiji” in water-cooled version pictured

The fact that AMD is about to release a new series of graphics cards characterizes the news headlines of recent days. It is already confirmed that this is hardly a complete generational change without most models containing older circuits in a new version. However, this does not apply to the new flagship in the series.

What is said to be rendered images now circulating on the Internet, representing the famous “Fiji”, ie the first graphics card with stacked memories or High Bandwith Memory (HBM). Unexpectedly enough, the new flagship is no big deal but a relatively compact model in about the same size as today’s Radeon R9 285.

Thanks to the transition to the new memory technology, where a smaller number of memory capsules are placed very close to the graphics processor, the circuit board can be shortened to an estimated 20 centimeters. It can be compared to today’s flagship Radeon R9 290X, which in the basic version measures about 28 centimeters.

At the same time, AMD chooses to equip the reference model with closed water cooling. It suggests whether the new graphics processor is of the thirstier kind, but can also be seen as a sign that AMD prioritizes high performance over low power consumption.

The new Radeon 300 series will be introduced sometime in the second quarter of the year, probably in connection with the Computex Taipei trade fair in early June.
