RTX 3080 vs RTX 2080 vs RTX 2080 Ti: Specs | Hashrate |CPU | Config: Which is Best? – Performance in comparison

The new Nvidia video cards were highly anticipated: from the rumors that were heard around, these new GPUs would have had a better performance / price ratio than the RTX 2000 series, making 4K and 60 fps accessible to many more users. Now that some of these video cards are available, we decided to make comparisons to understand if the new RTX 3000 are really a clear step forward compared to the previous series.

To represent the new series we have taken la RTX 3080, high-end video card, and we compared it with the RTX 2080 and the RTX 2080 Ti, the high-end and very high-end GPUs of the previous series. Should you upgrade to the new RTXs? Find out in our comparison.

RTX 3080 vs RTX 2080 vs RTX 2080 Ti: technical data sheets and features compared

Let’s start by comparing the data sheets of the three GPUs, already reading them you can notice the differences that we will deepen better below the table.

The RTX 3080 is based on Nvidia’s new architecture, Ampere: this new architecture aims to increase general performance, but above all it aims to greatly improve support for technologies such as ray-tracing, up to now very difficult to manage even for high-end video cards.

More specifically, the new architecture Ampere brings with it new technologies such as Nvidia Reflex, which reduces latency by up to 50%, 2nd Generation RT Cores and 3rd Generation Tensor Cores which make AI-based technologies run more efficiently. The 3080 is by far the video card that features more CUDA Cores while, as was obvious, the 2080 is the one that has the least.

Looking at the table you will notice how the 3080 has lower frequencies than the other two video cards, this does not mean that the new Nvidia GPU is less “powerful” than the 2080, you have to consider that we are talking about two different architectures so these numbers are relative , but in any case it is a fact to be taken into account.

The RTX 3080 features GDDR6X memories in spite of the 2080s that the GDDR6 have, what does this mean in practice? It means that the 3080 has much faster memories than those of the previous series. With its 11 GB, the RTX 2080 Ti is the video card with the most memory, followed by the 3080 with 10 GB and the 2080 with 8 GB.

The launch price of the RTX 3080 is also significantly lower than that of the RTX 2080, a video card with performance not comparable to that of the new Nvidia GPU. If we compare the launch prices of the 3080 and 2080, it seems stupid to compare these two video cards, the 2080 Ti must necessarily be the most powerful, in reality the situation is very different.

RTX 3080 vs RTX 2080 vs RTX 2080 Ti: Benchmark

Now let’s move on to the most interesting part of the comparison, the in-game benchmarks. These video cards clearly aim for resolutions above the classic 1080p, so we also tested in 4K. The test results are in line with the datasheets we saw above, but are still very surprising considering the launch prices of the video cards.

Test platform

  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 9 3900X
  • Motherboard: MSI MAG X570 Tomahawk Wi-Fi
  • RAM: G.SKILL 2x8GB DDR4 4000MHz
  • SSD: Crucial P5 1Tb M.2
  • Power supply: Corsair AX860
  • Driver: GeForce 456.38 WHQL

Test in 1080p

Clearly all three video cards can handle 1080p very well even with maximum settings. The RTX 3080 was on average 15-20% more performing than the 2080 Ti and 30% more performing than the 2080, in both cases we are talking about very large differences considering that the 3080 is sold at a lower introductory price than both of the other two video cards.

Test in 1440p

Even in 1440p all video cards manage to offer excellent fps. The performance difference between the 3080 and 2080 Ti remains similar to the previous test, the first improves its advantage a little, while the gap that separates the new Nvidia video card with the 2080 increases, which in this test is almost 40% less performing.

Test in 4K

Now let’s move on to the resolution that most interests those who buy video cards of this level, 4K. One of the questions we were asking before these tests was: does the RTX 3080 manage to offer 4K and 60 fps? The answer, looking at the results, and yes: The only game where this video card is really put to the test is Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, but you have to bear in mind that the maximum settings were used in these tests. Also the RTX 2080 Ti manages to offer good performance in 4K, but as you can see for yourself, it is 20-25% less performing than the 3080, a difference that is certainly not negligible. The 2080 struggles much harder than other video cards and in many cases fails to deliver 60 fps.

Test Ray Tracing

In the last test we are going to observe the performance of the three video cards by activating ray tracing on one of the first titles to have supported this technology, Metro Exodus. The results show us that the RTX 3080 loses around 40% of the fps, the 2080 Ti and 2080 are closer to lose 50% of the fps. For now, ray tracing remains very heavy, but we are sure that within a year, also thanks to the release of the new consoles, developers will begin to support this technology better and better, making the 3080 perform better, a video card designed for these technologies.

A big help to GPUs to manage better ray tracing can come from DLSS, a technology especially useful at high resolutions such as 4K, which allows you to improve performance without worsening the graphics quality. Nvidia has promised that this technology is at the heart of its plans for the future, we hope this promise will be kept.

Conclusions: Which is the best between RTX 3080, 2080 and 2080 Ti?

The tests speak for themselves, the RTX 3080 was found to be the best performing video card among the three, managing to always offer the much coveted 60 fps even in 4K. Unfortunately, even with this video card, ray tracing remains a very heavy technology, although it is handled better than the old GPUs, but the better performance allows it to be activated while remaining close to 60 fps and the hopefully increasing support for DLSS could make this technology much less heavy. The price is certainly the most attractive aspect of the 3080, while offering far better performance than the 2080, it is sold at a lower introductory price of more than 100 €.

In conclusion, we recommend you take the RTX 3080 even if you have the 2080 Ti or the 2080? The answer is it depends: if you own a 2080 Ti, since the difference between the two video cards is not very big, we recommend that you stay with your current GPU, if you have a 2080, given the big difference in performance, we recommend that you upgrade to the new one 3080. If you’re building your own PC from scratch, we definitely recommend you out of the three la RTX 3080, currently is the best solution for gamers who want 4K without giving up fps.
