Russians explained how scammers can use QR codes
MOSCOW, 26 Sep — PRIME. With the spread of payment for purchases using QR codes in Russia, new schemes of fraudulent attacks on citizens’ wallets may appear, as has already happened in China, Timur Aitov, deputy chairman of the commission on digital financial technologies of the Council of the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said in an interview with Sputnik radio.
He explained in what situations it is worth being afraid of scammers. For example, if a person is going to pay for purchases using a QR code in a supermarket, then, as a rule, on the way to the checkout, he prepares the code in advance – activates the screen so as not to delay the queue, and “at this moment, attackers appear who photograph the code on a special camera and steal money.”
Akitov also noted that in China, QR codes are often falsified on the seller’s side: “Let’s take the example of renting a bicycle. Fraudsters stick their label on the QR code to pay, a person reads the code in full confidence that he pays for the use of a bicycle, but in reality The attacker gets the money.
