Looking at the table some differences immediately catch the eye: the first and most obvious is the different architecture on which the two processors are based, with the Ryzen 7 3700x which is based on the new Zen 2 e the i7 9700K on long-lived Coffee Lake. The AMD solution has more threads and consumes a little less than the Intel one, if you are interested in consumption this is an aspect to take into account.

Let’s start the comparison between the two processors with Cinebench, a widely used software that allows us to compare the performance of the two CPUs both in single-thread and in multi-thread. In both cases, as you can see in the graphs below, the Ryzen 7 3700x proves superior to the i7 9700K.

Even in the tests on wPrime, the Ryzen 7 3700x has the upper hand with a sharper difference than the Cinebench tests.

7-Zip

Tests on 7-Zip confirm that the Ryzen 7 is superior, in general use, to the i7: even on this program, in fact, the Ryzen has a not negligible advantage in performance.

Video games

If in the other tests the Ryzen 7 is always ahead of the i7, nel gaming the situation is reversed with the Intel solution that is the best. As always, the extent of this advantage depends on the game being examined, but in general we can say that the i7 9700K is superior to the Ryzen 7 3700x in gaming, with an advantage of around 10%.

The benchmark data lead us to two rulings: in general use the Ryzen 7 3700x is superior all’i7 9700K, nel gaminginstead the situation is reversed, with Intel’s solution proving to be the best, even if the difference isn’t that stark. Currently the i7 9700K costs roughly 15-20% more than the Ryzen 7 3700x, a big difference if we consider that in the only area where Intel is superior, that is gaming, the performance advantage is not clear-cut. Another element to consider is the futureability of the two platforms: the i7 9700K is part of the last generation that will use this socket, on the contrary the Ryzen 7 3700x offers a good possibility of future upgrade.

Going to the point, which do we recommend between the two? For us the best choice, especially considering the quality / price ratio, it’s the Ryzen 7 3700x: for a great price you take home a perfect CPU for every use and that manages to keep up with Intel processors, albeit being a bit lower, even in gaming, an aspect where AMD processors have always struggled. If budget is not your problem and you are only interested in gaming, clearly thei7 9700K is the ideal solution but don’t expect much better performance.
