Samsung introduces GDDR6 memory

The prices of DRAM have risen sharply in the past year, partly due to high demand from manufacturers of mobile devices. Earlier this month, Samsung announced that it will increase production rates from the first quarter of 2018.

Now the electronics giant Samsung is once again announcing news regarding its memory production, but this time it is about the company’s new memory type GDDR6 that has been completed. The memory is the sequel to the well-established graphics memory GDDR5, where the newcomer offers higher bandwidth at lower voltage.

With GDDR6, Samsung states that the maximum bandwidth ends up at 16 Gbps, which is higher than the 14 Gbps that the company previously talked about. The bandwidth can be compared with the graphics memory implemented in new models of Geforce GTX 1060, where the clock frequency is 9,000 MHz and the bandwidth of 9 Gbps. The voltage for GDDR6 takes a step down from 1.5 volts to 1.35 volts.

The GDDR6 memory type is current in Nvidia’s next generation of graphics cards named Volta. The memory standard used in AMD’s Navi is still unknown.
