We continue the tests of Silverstone products with today a case which is intended to be small but without sacrificing performance because even if it is only compatible with mini-ITX motherboards and power supplies SFX accepts a graphics card with a maximum length of 33cm, which gives access to a lot of choices for a gamer configuration! The Silverstone ML07 is therefore the little brother of the Raven RVZ01 with an identical chassis, only the absence of fans, dust filters and the look differentiates them, its price of around € 75 should make it a very good choice for a small gaming PC, if the tests are conclusive of course and we will see that without further delay

The materials of the Silversteon ML07 are very classic, no aluminum here but plastic on the outside and metal on the inside. The number of bays is rather small but remaining very correct for this type of product with 1 slot for a “slim” format disk drive, 1 dedicated 3.5 “slot and 3 slots for 2.5” SSD / HDD, as much as the trend is clearly towards SSDs at Silverstone.

In terms of ventilation there are 3 locations for 12cm fans, unfortunately there is no original delivered (unlike its big brother the Raven RVZ01 which has 2) which will certainly require a checkout in order to improve the air flow of the beast.

The dimensions are really very small with 38.2cm wide, 35cm deep and only 10.5cm high (it is possible to orient the case in 2 different ways) which will result in a maximum height of the processor cooler of 8.3cm and compatibility with SFX power supplies only (like the excellent Silverstone SX-600G tested here), the graphics card is however very well off with a maximum length of 33cm! Its weight is also very contained with only 3.71kg on the scale, no need to be a superman to handle the case for once!

Offered at a price of around 75 € and given the dimensions of the beast, the Silverstone ML07 will certainly (if the tests go well) a serious competitor to the “steam machine” all assembled or a very good case for a mini-PC games.

Silverstone_ML07_boite5

We can say that the top of the Silverstone ML07 box is really very sober! A basic cardboard box with only the brand logo, I certainly won’t complain.

On the sides we can see the technical specifications as well as a small introduction on the various advantages of the small ML07 (derived from the Raven RVZ01, dual orientation, compatible with large graphics cards etc.). Everything is once again very sober.

Silverstone_ML07_boite_ouverte

Once the box is open we find the small ML07 wrapped in a plastic bag and all in two pieces of polystyrene, simple but effective. The manual proudly advocates on the case.

Silverstone_ML07_devant

Silverstone_ML07_below

The door which gives directly to the processor is equipped with a location for a 12cm fan. Below, at the level of the graphics card, there are 2 slots for 12cm fans, the graphics card is therefore particularly well off in terms of ventilation (if we add fans), we can also see the honeycomb grid of the power supply SFX on the left.
It’s time to open the beast!

Silverstone_ML07_interieur1

Here is the interior of the Silverstone ML07! How we can see it everything is rather packed inside, on the left there is a plastic part which is there to accommodate the graphics card up to 33cm long, above this part are 2 2.5 ″ slots. The right part is of course reserved for the motherboard as well as the power supply, the power supply cage is surmounted by the one and only 3.5 ″ slot. Let’s take a closer look!

Silverstone_ML07_interieur2

Once the left plastic part has been removed we can see the 2 slots for 12cm fans, they will blow directly on the graphics card which will greatly help the temperatures of said card.

Silverstone_ML07_interieur_compartiment_alimentation

The power supply compartment is removable and has a honeycomb grille to ensure a flow of fresh air, an extension is also present as the mains connector is located on the back of the case.

Silverstone_ML07_graphic_card_location2

The plastic part housing the graphics card has a PCIe riser in order to install it perpendicular to the motherboard, making it possible to reduce the height of the case without cutting back on the size of the graphics card.

Silverstone_ML07_bundle

The bundle consists of:

  • 1 Silverstone ML07 box (yes yes!)
  • 1 Manuel
  • 4 feet for vertical installation
  • 4 feet for horizontal installation
  • 1 Silverstone logo sticker
  • 1 PCie extension to connect the graphics card to the PCIe riser
  • The necessary screws

As we can see the bundle is rather complete, it will be possible to install the box in 2 different positions and according to the chosen orientation the small Silverstone logo can be placed as we see fit!

The configuration used during the tests is as follows:

  • Processeur: Intel Core i5 655K @ Stock
  • CPU Fan : Silverstone AR06
  • Motherboard : Gigabyte GA-H55N-USB3
  • Carte graphique : XFX 7870 Black Edition
  • Mémoire: Kingston HyperX 1 x 4 Go 1600Mhz
  • SSD: Intel X25-M 80Go
  • Disque dur: WD Black 1 To
  • Power supply : Silverstone SX600-G
  • Fans : 2 x Silverstone FN123 and 1 x Silverstone FQ121
  • Operating system : Windows 8.1 64bits

The Silverstone ML07 will be tested once original and therefore without fans, once with 2 x Silversonte FN123 in front of the graphics card and 1 x FQ121 in front of the motherboard in 5V and once in 12V. The fans chosen are the fans recommended for the case, and as I had them on hand I might as well take advantage of them!

The assembly in the Silverstone ML07 went rather well, as usual in this kind of box you have to assemble everything in a precise order and be careful to pass the cables in every corner in order to have something more or less clean. Only the screws of the power supply cage on the front facade side caused me some concern because they are really not easy to access and without a magnetic screwdriver I wish good luck to anyone who tries to put them back in place!

Silverstone_ML07_graphic_card_adapter

A quick word about the installation of the graphics card, you have to put the little “extension” directly on the graphics card.

Silverstone_ML07_graphic_card_installed

Then all you have to do is plug everything into the PCIe port of the riser and screw the card, nothing too complicated!

Silverstone_ML07_montage_final

Here is the beast once mounted! As we can see everything is well packed inside, it is normal in this type of case but the space is sufficient to allow the motherboard and its components to breathe.

In order to test the box, I will carry out an OCCT Power Supply test for 30mins and then take the temperatures of the main components such as the processor (average of the 4 cores), the motherboard, the graphics card as well as the hard drive.
Regarding noise pollution, I will proceed as in the file on silent PCs, namely 1 raised in front, to the right, to the left, to the rear and above with the box in a vertical position.

Repos

Silverstone_ML07_results_temperature_results

At rest and without fans the temperatures in the ML07 are quite good, apart from the motherboard which tends to suffer from the lack of active ventilation via case fans. The processor as well as the graphics card are not doing too badly thanks to the openings which are right next to them. Once the fans are connected, the motherboard feels revived and loses 8 ° in 5V and another 6 ° in 12V, the other components gain a few more degrees but to a lesser extent.

Silverstone_ML07_resultats_repos_nuisances_sonores

Ambient sound level: 31dB

Originally and without fan the noise is really well known in the ML07, the vibrations of the hard drive are rather well contained even if we still hear the raptor, it is not easy to tame that one! We can consider the ML07 silent for a PC of this type, even with 5V fans. In 12V on the other hand, the fans are clearly heard and it is not advisable to stay nearby, nor to leave them all the time in 12V for the good of our ears!

Silverstone_ML07_resultats_repos_pwm

The rotational speed of the fans does not change much with or without the fans, which is normal given the low heat generated by the components at rest. Only the graphics card fans benefit from the additional airflow by going from the original 1216RPM to 1166RPM with the 2 fans in 12V.

Charge

Silverstone_ML07_resultats_charge_temperatures

In load the components are rather abused without additional fans, indeed with 84 ° for the graphics card, 66 ° for the processor and 60 ° for the motherboard we are rather in the red, even if the temperatures remain in the range of use it is really not advisable to use the PC like this too long at the risk of reducing the life of the components. Once the fans are installed and in 5V we lose 5 ° on the graphics card, 9 ° on the processor and 6 ° on the motherboard, I think this is the best compromise. In 12V we still lose 1 ° on the graphics card, 13 ° on the processor and 8 ° on the motherboard, but this will be at the cost of much higher noise pollution.

Silverstone_ML07_resultats_charge_nuisances_sonores

Ambient sound level: 31dB

With 5V fans the PC is quieter than without fans, this is easily explained by the fans of the processor and the graphics card which must turn faster to compensate for the lack of fresh air. With 50 dB maximum on the right side (where there is the graphics card) the whole is clearly not silent but remains acceptable for a product of this type, not to mention that OCCT really represents the maximum load which is not really achievable in real conditions. Once the fans are in 12V on the other hand, the PC turns into a blower and will not be really pleasant to use.

Silverstone_ML07_resultats_charge_pwm

As I said above, the fans of the graphics card and of the original processor are really running at full speed, and it is therefore normal to have lower noise pollution with additional fans on the box in 5v than without them. There is on the other hand very little difference between the fans in 5V and 12V, it is necessary to cool the graphics card well!

Silverstone_ML07_featured

Here we are at the end of this test, what about the Silverstone ML07?
More and more people are looking for a small gaming PC to place it under the TV, it turns out that the choice of a box is more difficult if we want to keep a minimum of performance, the Silverstone ML07 brings together the best of both worlds with a small size while allowing the installation of a rather powerful graphics card. The build quality is very good, noise pollution is rather contained thanks to the well-placed openings if silent fans are installed.

However, all is not rosy because once the box acquired will have to be ironed by the cash register for additional fans, as well as dust filters if you do not want to vacuum the PC every week. Offered at a price of around € 75, it will be the perfect companion for a “gamer” mini-PC as long as you choose the components installed, a case that will be perfect for a steam machine for example!

Advantages

  • On
  • Performance for its size
  • Build quality
  • Ideal for a Steam Machine

Disadvantages

  • No original fans
  • No original dust filters

A big thank you to Marie from Silverstone who allowed me to do this test.
