“Source of Xbox Series X stolen”

In December 2019, AMD was contacted by a person who came across test files with source code for the company’s graphics technology. The source code revealed details about the Navi family and what then went by the code name “Arden”, which speculation pointed out as the graphics part of the game console Xbox Series X.

Parts of the source code were published on the developer portal Github, where the remaining parts were to be auctioned off to the highest bidder. Torrentfreak is now publishing further details about the leak based on conversations with the person responsible for the stolen source code. According to the report, the source code contains technical details about the graphics chips Navi 10, Navi 21 and “Arden” from Xbox Series X.

At AMD, data security and the protection of our intellectual property are a priority. In December 2019, we were contacted by someone who claimed to have test files related to a subset of our current and future graphics products, some of which were recently posted online, but have since been taken down.

While we are aware the perpetrator has additional files that have not been made public, we believe the stolen graphics IP is not core to the competitiveness or security of our graphics products. We are not aware of the perpetrator possessing any other AMD IP. We are working closely with law enforcement officials and other experts as a part of an ongoing criminal investigation

The extent to which the alleged leaked source code actually contains technical information from AMD’s graphics architectures has so far been unclear, but a new statement from AMD confirms its legitimacy. In a request to Github to have the content removed under the DMCA copyright law, AMD confirms that the source code affects the company’s graphics technology, but at the same time believes that the content is not critical to the ability to remain competitive.

The source code was unexpectedly achieved from an unprotected computer//server through some exploits. I later found out about the files inside it. They weren’t even protected properly or even encrypted with anything which is just sad

Github responds to AMD’s request received by deleting current code archive. In a conversation with Torrentfreak, the person behind the leak reveals that the files with the source code were found on an unprotected server, and that these lacked standard protection mechanisms or encryption.

The person values the content at 100 million USD, and if no willing buyer is found, the person intends to release the files freely but with password protection so that only selected individuals have access to the content. The case is the target of an ongoing police investigation.
