Spain doubled purchases of Russian gas in August

MADRID, Sep 12 – PRIME. Spain increased purchases of Russian natural gas by 102.19% in August compared to the same month last year, while imports of this raw material from Algeria, traditionally a major supplier of gas to the kingdom, fell by 34.8%, according to data published on Monday by the Spanish energy company Enagas.

In particular, Spain bought 4,505 gigawatt-hours of Russian natural gas last month, compared to 2,228 gigawatt-hours in August 2021. At the same time, 9,127 gigawatt-hours were imported from Algeria compared to 13,397 a year earlier.

As for the share of each country in the total volume of natural gas imports by Spain in August 2022, the United States accounted for 26.5% of supplies, Algeria – 24%, Nigeria – 15.3%, France – 12.3%. Russia ranked fifth among the country’s main suppliers (11.8%).

Natural gas purchases by Spain in the first eight months of the year increased by 13.89% year on year, amounting to 301,498 gigawatt hours.

Spain is one of the EU countries with the widest list of natural gas suppliers. According to the EpData information platform created by Europa Press, among the traditional gas exporters to the kingdom are Algeria, the United States, France, Russia, Equatorial Guinea, Nigeria, Norway, Qatar, Trinidad and Tobago.
