The head of the IAEA made a proposal to create a protective zone around the ZNPP

MOSCOW, 12 Sep — PRIME. A protective zone around the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant should be created as a result of an agreement between Ukraine and Russia, said IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.

Representatives of the IAEA remain at the Zaporozhye NPP
“I think we should follow a simple path. Therefore, we made proposals that we consider realistic. We need an agreement … between Ukraine and Russia,” the head of the agency said at a press conference during the September session of the IAEA Board of Governors.
So he answered the question of journalists about the possible format for creating this protective zone.
Grossi stressed that the agreement should be based “on simple principles” – “do not attack or shoot at the station.” The IAEA stands ready to assist in this regard in monitoring the situation on the ground. On the part of Russia and Ukraine, according to him, there are “signals of interest” in concluding such an agreement.
Zaporozhye NPP is located on the left bank of the Dnieper near the town of Energodar. This is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe in terms of the number of units and installed capacity – the plant has six power units with a capacity of 1 gigawatt each. Since March, it has been guarded by the Russian military to prevent leaks of nuclear and radioactive materials.
The Ukrainian military continues to regularly shell Enerhodar and the territory of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant adjacent to the city.
