Tajik authorities raised electricity tariffs

MONDAY, OCTOBER 2 – PRIME, Lidiya Isamova. In Tajikistan, on the eve, according to a government decree, electricity tariffs for individuals and legal entities were increased, with the exception of the Tajik aluminum company TALCO.

According to the decree of the government of Tajikistan, which was officially published on September 13, the population will pay from October 26.51 dirams (2.5 cents) for each kWh of electricity instead of the current tariff of 22.66 dirams (2.3 cents) per kWh. hours. In the official press, residents of the country were informed the day before that from October 2 they would receive receipts with a new rate of payment.

The document states that from October 1, electricity tariffs will increase for all consumer groups, with the exception of the TALCO aluminum plant.

The country’s authorities have previously stated that the current tariffs do not cover the cost of electricity generation. The last time electricity tariffs in Tajikistan increased was in the summer of 2019. In 2020, there was no increase in tariffs for electricity and water due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The World Bank recommended that the government of Tajikistan raise electricity tariffs from 2017 to 2025 to ensure that electricity is used rationally in the country and to improve the financial condition of the Barki Tojik energy holding.
