Test – Asus ROG Thor 1200 Watts

Introduction

Hi all!

We no longer present Asus, which has quantities of different products in its catalog, whether motherboards (his first love, when he was still called Asustek), graphics cards, peripherals and so on. Today, the manufacturer has decided to expand once again, with power supplies named ROG Thor! We have two blocks (for the moment), in 850 and 1200 Watts, so only for those who have a huge configuration, or those who think they need it 🙂
Offered at a price of € 249 for the 850 Watts and around € 360 (£ 315 from ocerclockers.co.uk) for the 1200 Watts, the ROG Thor is clearly not for everyone! To justify such a price, Asus has however added some features, such as customizable RGB LEDs and an OLED screen. Let’s take a closer look!

Presentation and bundle

The box displays the color directly, with a product proudly displaying the ROG logo, like any good “gaming” product from the manufacturer. Here we find a photo of the beast on the front, with of course the model name and logos Asus Aura Sync, 80Plus Platinum and the 10 year warranty.
At the rear, a list of the highlights is present, the OLED screen, the RGB, hybrid ventilation system and braided cable. The best of the marketing here is ROG radiators, and yes, Republic of gamers radiators! Basically, pieces of aluminum on which the ROG logo is present, in short …

When you open the box, we also see that Asus is doing everything to offer us a high-end product, even in the smallest details. The little ROG logo is there to welcome us, two separate boxes are also part of the game, one for the block (which is sandwiched between two thick foams) and the other for the modular cables.

Asus is not stingy on the bundle, still happy given the price of the set you will tell us! We have a manual, a power cord (EU and UK), a cablemod discount coupon, combs for braided cables, plastic and scratch cable ties, the necessary screws and an Asus metal sticker to stick there wherever you want!

Like any high-end power supply, the Asus ROG Thor 1200 allows you to use all the power for which it is sold on the 12V, no confusion at this level, with 1200 Watts available on the single 12V rail, from the heavy! The block is 80Plus Platinum certified, so logically the performance will be excellent. On the other hand, one might wonder why Asus has not made an 80Plus Titanium certified unit, which is therefore best nowadays, quite simply because Seasonic does not have 1200 Watts in its catalog equipped with this certification, pity! It should also be noted that Asus had 80Plus competitor, namely Cybenetics, which certifies the ROG Thor 1200 ETA-A for performance and LAMBDA-A + for noise level, perform excellent results once again. You can find them here, if the technique does not scare you! The dimensions of the block are quite generous, with 19 cm of depth, so be careful if you plan to install it in a narrow box, this may not be possible!
As we said above, the unit is distinguished by the presence of an OLED screen on the side, as well as several addressable and controllable RGB LEDs via Asus Aura Sync that can be plugged directly into a motherboard of the brand.
Offered at a price of around 360 €, the Asus Thor signs us a higher price compared to its closest sister Seasonic Prime Ultra Platinum 1300 Watts (offered at around 275 €), some things have however been revised, such as the fan, larger radiators, OLED screen and LEDs etc. The warranty is 10 years for the unit (12 for the Seasonic), which is already very good, but where the bottom hurts is that the screen and LEDs are only guaranteed for 3 years. Even if the guarantee of the unit itself and therefore its proper functioning is quite high, if the screen no longer displays anything after 4 years for example and you will not be able to return it, which is a shame. rate.
